WHY CAN'T THE HELP DESK HELP ME WITH MY NON LINKSYS or NETGEAR Router?

You've been sent here by a help desk technician because of difficulties with your router.  If you read this, it will help explain what the technician told you, and hopefully lead to a better internet experience in the future.

Your internet connection is coming to your home/office by one of several methods.  Perhaps through:

1. your cable TV box (usually a larger black box about the size of a VCR)

2. through a wireless radio link to a tower in crookston, alton elevator, or grand forks.

3. a DSL Modem.

Your internet service provider only has the obligation to make sure that the signal is reaching you.   If you have a small home/office network, it is your responsibility to purchase, install, maintain it.   We (helpdeskguys) will try to help you set it up and keep it working but you must understand and agree to some terms.

A. It's your responsibility to know the IP address (usually starts 192.168.x.x) to be able to access your router from your computer (the computer will have to be wired to the router-NOT wireless).  If you have a Link-sys (our best choice) or a Net Gear, we know them, just because we work with them literally every hour of the day.   If you have another brand, such as D-link, or Belkin, or TPLink.  We might be lucky and figure it out, but if we don't, and you don't have the information.  Then we're STUCK and unable to continue.  We will be happy to hook 1 computer direct to your internet service providers end unit or cable.  But we are not responsible for making any router work.  We have the best chance to help you and succeed if you have a Link-sys or Netgear.

B. It's your responsibility to know the access codes (user name & password) into your router.  We know some of the generic ones, but if they don't work we're either dead in the water, OR we have one other choice and that's to COMPLETELY RESET your router like it was the day it came from the store, and then proceed with paragraph A. above.
